We all love a good TV show to binge during a pandemic, don’t we? So how about if I give you 5 TV shows that I’ve binged during the pandemic? As we all know, this has been a very difficult and tough year for everyone. The spread of Covid-19 and all of it’s devastating effects on the global community. I don’t know about you guys, but throughout the pandemic, I have had days where I have felt so so productive and on top of the world; but other days I have felt like I really just don’t have the energy for anything and feel very sluggish; not even to binge a TV show! It has been very up and down experience for everyone. I have found that people have dealt with these times in many different ways. Some have turned to food for comfort; and others have turned to a good old TV series (But if you’re anything like me you’ll have turned to both of these at some point!)
So whilst binge-eating delicious junk food, I have also binge-watched quite a few shows, which I believe are definitely worth mentioning. Let me get straight down to it, last time I gave you my 5 Comforting TV Shows For A Rainy Day, now here are 5 TV shows that I’ve binged during the pandemic!
1. The Umbrella Academy
Now this is a show that I really wasn’t sure about at first, however the more I watched it the more I started to fall so in love with it! I ended up watching both seasons in just two days. Without giving too much away, this show revolves around seven children who are adopted by the eccentric Sir Reginald Hargreeves; and turned into a superhero team that he calls, you guessed it; “The Umbrella Academy.”
This dysfunctional but lovable family will capture your hearts. There is no other show like this one. All of the characters are so unique and different, but the dynamic between them is amazing. They are definitely stronger together than they are apart. I love all of the characters, but my favourite character has to be Number Five; he seems to always keep and bring the family back together somehow. However, the amazingly flamboyant Klaus is 100% a very close second. There is also something about The Handler as well that I just love, I think it’s her outfits! I won’t be giving any spoilers, but there is a major cliff hanger at the end of season two. Cannot believe we have to wait so long for the next season! I highly recommend this show.
2. La Casa De Papel (Money Heist)
I don’t know if it was the same for you guys who have watched it, but I was absolutely gripped to this show from the very start. The series follows two well and long prepared heists led by The Professor; one on the Royal Mint of Spain and then another on the Bank of Spain. The narrative is told in a real-time-like fashion and relies on flashbacks, time-jumps and hidden character motivations. The show is narrated (unreliably) from the perspective of the female heist member, Tokyo.
Again, I really don’t want to give too much away for any of you guys that haven’t seen it; but oh my god! You must give this show a try. I can’t tell you how many times I have gasped in fear, excitement and relief all in the space of just one episode. It is one of those shows where you can see that what this group of heist members are doing is very wrong, but in the end as you get to know the characters; you actually start routing for them! It’s like yeah you print that money! Yeah you take that gold! As soon as you see how much of a mastermind The Professor is, but also how very human and nerdy he still is; he will be your favourite character of the show without a doubt. I highly recommend this show, it’s a roller-coaster!
Wow! Another amazing show. I have to say, it took me quite a few episodes to get into this one. I think I had to get about half way into season one. However, once you’re reeled in by all of it’s craziness; you’ll be locked in until the very end of the series. I was well and truly reeled in. This show bases around self-employed financial adviser, Marty Byrde and his family. After a money laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel goes horribly wrong, Marty proposes to make amends by offering to set up a bigger laundering operation in the Lake of the Ozarks. This leads Marty to dragging his family; Wendy, his wife; and their two teenagers Charlotte and Jonah, from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks, where he must launder money to appease a drug boss. The family soon become entangled with local criminals, including the Langmore and Snell families.
I swear, this show just gets crazier and crazier the more you watch it! There are so many twists and turns; it’s another one of those series which will have you gasping in fear, excitement and relief. The part that I love about this show, is that this is another dysfunctional family; but whenever stuff goes down, they always show up for each other no matter what. And can I just say, Ruth Langmore is hands down the best character of the show, what an amazing actress! Another series that I very highly recommend.
4. Outer Banks
If you’re into those TV shows that have a perfect mixture between romance, humour and drama; then you will absolutely love Outer Banks. This teen drama follows a group of teenagers in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, who are called the “Pogues”. The mischievous group of friends are determined to find out what happened to the missing father of the groups ringleader, John B. Along the way, they discover a legendary treasure that is tied to John B’s father. The Pogues seek to overcome obstacles such as drugs, love, fighting, friendship and money.
Although that this show is based around a group of teens, I believe that this show is built for almost any audience. From all of it’s action, romance, adventure and mystery; it is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat (it certainly did for me!) I could not stop watching it, I absolutely had to know what happened next. I went through one episode after another; and before I knew it I had finished all of the episodes in one day! I love the dynamic between the group of friends, as well as the dynamic between the “Pogues” and the “Kooks”. All of the characters are very human and so relatable, as they are all going through their own personal struggles. Unfortunately, there is only one season so far; but it has been renewed for another season. So make sure you catch up before the next one comes out! I promise you won’t regret it. I highly recommend Outer Banks to everyone.
5. Selling Sunset
If you’re like me, someone who’s guilty pleasure is a bit of reality TV; then this show is definitely for you! This show revolves around the high-end residential properties in LA, marketed by the Oppenheim Groups real estate brokerage firm. It tracks the group of agents as they navigate their personal and professional lives.
I have to say it, I absolutely love this show! I can’t get enough of the drama surrounding this group of women. They all have such strong personalities, so strong that I’m surprised the office they work in hasn’t exploded yet! I absolutely love Mary, she seems like such a loyal friend and is always there for everyone. I also love Maya, she just doesn’t get herself involved in the drama and she’s just doing her. And I cannot finish here without mentioning Christine; she is the ultimate queen of the series! I highly recommend if you love yourself some reality TV drama.
So there we have it! 5 TV shows that I’ve binged during a pandemic. I cannot recommend these shows enough. If you have seen these shows or you are now thinking of starting any of the ones I have mentioned; please let me know and share your thoughts below!
